Bjork reference:
My Family (Vulnicura)
Select Lyrics by Kate McCandless

I was just really inspired by those few lines in Bjork's song "Family" from Vulnicura. "Is there a place...where I can pay respect...to the death of my family." Just that moment of grief.

I wanted to capture the feeling of grief of being on the other side of Motherhood. Having gone through the threshold. You are a different person; You grieve the person you were. You grieve the lack of respect and honor and ceremony in your culture for Birth and Motherhood. It really weighs on you.
I wanted to take the song from this micro level of that experience, that grief, to the macro level of singing from the perspective of Mother Earth. Of ALL the Mother Ancestors coming to this woman's aid and being her advocate. Really pointing the finger at society and saying "NOW SIT DOWN AND THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU'VE DONE!!!"

The work of the Mother is so often invisible. Taken for granted. Whether it's the every day Mother taking care of her children, her household, or our Mother Earth who's natural systems we abuse. This song is like ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.

lyrics

Is there a place…
Where I

Where I can pay respect,
To the

To the Woman who was…
Show some
Show some respect.

Is there a place
Where I

Where I can pay respect,
To the

To the Woman who Was
Show some
Show some respect.

To the blushing bride
Show some
To the optimistic girl
Show some
To the naive Mother-
to-be

Show some respect.

So Where
Did I go?

Did I disappear?

Into Ether?
I fall down
Tumble down
on
my
knees

IS THERE A PLACE
WHERE WE CAN PAY RESPECT
TO THE MOTHER WHO WORKS

SHOW SOME RESPECT

To the Warrior coming home
Show her respect.
Lay a crown on her head
She some respect.

BUT WHERE….DID SHE GO…?
DID SHE DISAPPEAR
OR DID YOU
TAKE FOR GRANTED?
