about

Bjork references:
An Echo, A Stain (Vespertine)
Isobel (Post)
Select lyrics by Kate McCandless

This song sort of just flowed out of me. I think it really embodies the experience I had during the postpartum phase of Motherhood, feeling so cooped up and isolated and longing to be "free" again. Free to go off into my imagination and creativity "Rather be Sea Singing..." I suffered greatly from depression and anxiety after giving birth to my child, but I don't really call it Postpartum depression, because it was not just related to "hormones" but the systemic dis functionality in the United States to support Mothers, parents and children - especially during the first 3 years. You get depressed because there isn't enough support. You're on your own and expected to perform at a normal level as if you didn't just walk through the most intense threshold of your life.
This song is also inspired by the song 'Isobel" and a story Bjork told about it. A woman named "Isobel" went to go live in the forest by herself and sent out these little Moths to the city to give her message. "A message of instinct." So these little moths would show up "unexplained on your collar.." and flash before your eyes "Na Na Na Na Na..." and remind you to listen to your instincts and not just be "sensible" all the time.
I imagined these Moths coming to the singer in this song...waking her up. Bring her back to herself.

lyrics

They watch
me from
the shore

I’m not sure
I can give them

All they need
From Me.

Rather be Sea Singing….

Rather be Swimming…

They watch
me from
the shore

I’m not sure

I can give To them

All they need

From me

RATHER BE SEA SINGING

Rather be sea singing

My Heart
won’t be
denied.

Love you till then….
I love you till then

But my Heart
Won’t be
Denied

Unexplained on your collar

Unexplained

Unexplained on your collar

Unexplained

The MOTH
of INSTINCT

Instinct…
